“For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” Ephesians 2:10 (NIV)
On a pleasant, autumn afternoon my 5-year-old granddaughter and I sat in the outdoor arena at the zoo and watched Sparky the sea lion slip through a pool of water with remarkable speed and agility, aided by strong flippers and a long, sleek body that narrowed to a pointy nose. I marveled at how God designed this creature.
Later that day, in the cool of the evening, my 3-year-old grandson and I hid behind a patch of raspberries in my backyard and stared at a rabbit as it munched on clover, its big eyes staring back at us. After a few minutes my grandson whispered to me,
“I’m going to run after that rabbit,” which he did, his short legs racing as fast as they could. The rabbit hunched down for a moment and then easily bounded away into the woods. Again, I marveled at God’s handiwork.
The sea lion is fast in the water but slow on land. The rabbit is fast on land but a poor swimmer. My grandchildren? Well, I’m still wondering how they’ll turn out, but I’m confident they’ll prove to be gifted at something.
How can I be so sure? My confidence comes from the Bible, which says that God formed every creature on this planet. We are God’s carefully handcrafted work of art, not an assembly line product, mass produced without thought. We are custom designed, one-of-a-kind, original masterpieces, made by God for a purpose – good works!
Thank you, Lord, that I am your handiwork, created by You for the purpose of doing good works. Show me what to do with the time and talents you’ve given me; how I can use them for the benefit of others.
